Upgrading of High Traffic Areas of Professional Baseball Stadium with Non-Toxic Coating
Company: Lifetime Green Coatings
Location: Denver, CO
Renovations: High traffic areas and restroom facilities
About the Project
This project was done on a 76-acre baseball park located in downtown Denver, Colorado. It is the home field of the professional baseball team, the city’s Major League Baseball (‘MLB’) franchise. It is named after the brewing company, which purchased the naming rights to the park before its completion in 1995. The team played their first two seasons, 1993 and 1994, in Mile High Stadium before moving to current field. There are 30 MLB fields in the US.
This case study concerns key upgrading of high traffic areas of baseball field which included restroom facilities where tough hygiene and cleaning routines had taken their toll on the conventional surface protective coatings in the 20-plus years of use.
Of paramount consideration was to upgrade floor surfaces using a coating that met the highest possible green credentials with zero Volatile Organic Compounds and zero toxicity. This was to not only protect the applicators but also the public and staff prior to and after coating completion. The coating must also not in any way force a compromise on hygiene standards by having to use less effective, weaker disinfectants.
The client also wanted the coating to look good for the fans rather than merely institutional. They required a tough high traffic coating, with a quick turnaround time of three days. Years of heavy use had left the surface damaged and appearing dull. Due to this, the coating was also required to self-level, fill in gashes and cracks making them undetectable and protected from further deterioration, and add a luxurious feel to the facility.
Of direct relevance, is Lifetime’s history of use in commercial and private garages, and on ship decks still intact over 25 years later. It performs exceptionally well in situations where footfalls or vehicular traffic is heavy. With the client’s concern for zero impact in terms of even small traces of toxic emissions, including that of a cured product, it is notable that Lifetime Coatings has an ANSI/NSF-61 rating for contact with drinking water. It also has a Class ‘A’ flame retardant standard.
Lifetime Coatings has been used to protect many hundreds of frac oil and production water tanks in US oilfields where fracking fluids contain a wide variety of chemicals, many of them extremely corrosive, more so than conventional cleaners and disinfectants. Of particular note is Lifetime’s permanently retained flexibility, along with the ability to re-bond to itself years later if repairs are required. Conventional epoxies micro-crack often within days of application when the substrates, typically steel, is subjected to torqueing, heavy vibrations and even physical impact.

What We Did
Preparations to provide a clean and totally dry application surface went as anticipated. The Lifetime Coatings was manually applied to a minimum depth of 40- 50 mls. The applicators wore standard safety equipment giving them full eye and face protection and all other exposed skin was protected either by coveralls or gloves. Lifetime Coatings’ phenomenal adhesion qualities – double most conventional epoxies – extends to human skin and tissue making it especially important to wear protective eyewear. The Lifetime Coatings was, as instructed, given a decorative finish with Colorado Rockies team colors of white, black and purple flake as can be seen from the photograph.
This client was thrilled with our ability to come in on time and on budget. They were also pleased with our level of communication, having had several different strategy meetings both virtual and in-person, as well as meetings with several different executive managers from our company.
