Why Kansas City Concrete Cracks
Most people think of freeze-thaw as a winter problem. Here it is closer to a year-round one. A continental climate in the middle of the country produces swings that a coastal city never sees, and the concrete responds to each one. Water works into the pores of a bare slab, freezes overnight, expands and widens the space it found. Do that across an unpredictable Missouri winter and the surface starts to pit, scale, and dust, usually beginning near the garage door where snowmelt collects.
That movement is also what breaks rigid coatings. Standard epoxy has very little give, so when the slab expands and contracts the coating crazes, lifts at the crack edges, and spreads from there. Ours has 120% elongation and stretches with the concrete instead, bonded at 100% adhesion so there is no edge for the movement to work under. It applies from -20°F to 120°F, which matters in a city where the installation window is not a neat summer season.
Road salt is the second problem, and Kansas City uses a lot of it. De-icers come home in the wheel wells, drip onto the slab, and sit there through the season working at a surface that is already opening up. Bare concrete absorbs them and deteriorates from within, which is the spalling you see on older driveways every spring. Our coating is non-porous and compatible with 350 chemicals, so what comes off the road stays on the surface and mops away.
Summers bring the other extreme. Humidity rises, slabs warm, and hot tire pickup shows up on coatings that soften under a warm tire. They grip the rubber and tear away when you reverse out, leaving a crescent under each wheel. Ours is hot tire resistant and rated for continuous service to 200°F.
Below grade, the same coating works in a basement. It is waterproof at 0.3% water absorption, seamless with nothing porous for mildew to take hold in, and the basecoat is zero-VOC and odor-free, which matters more in a finished basement than anywhere else in the house.
Installation takes a day. Most floors need only a broom-sweep prep, though some require mild grinding or sanding, and the floor is ready for full use in 24 hours.
