Northeast Ohio sits in the snowbelt, and that means more of everything a concrete floor dislikes. Lake-effect snow lingers longer here than it does twenty miles inland, so slabs go through more freeze-thaw cycles each winter, and more salt and slush gets dragged into the garage.
There is a second issue specific to a city with this much older housing. A slab poured in the 1950s generally has no vapor barrier beneath it, which changes what a coating has to do. We assess that before quoting rather than after.

Salt Brine, Lake-Effect Winters, and Older Slabs
Road salt does more lasting damage here than most homeowners realize, and the reason is chemistry rather than corrosion. Calcium chloride from winter road treatment soaks into untreated concrete, and once the chloride is in the slab it does not simply wash out. It attracts moisture, so it keeps drawing vapor up through the floor for years afterward, long after the winter that put it there. That is why an old garage floor can feel damp in July, and why a coating applied over an untreated slab can lift a season later for no obvious reason.
Sealing the surface stops that cycle at the start. Our coating is non-porous with 0.3% water absorption and is compatible with 350 chemicals, so the brine tracked in each winter stays on top and mops away rather than working into the concrete.
The freeze-thaw side is simply a matter of volume. Lake-effect snow sits longer in the snowbelt than in the rest of Ohio, so a Cleveland slab moves through more cycles each winter than one an hour south. Water works into the pores, freezes, expands and widens the space it found, and the surface begins to pit and scale. That movement also breaks rigid coatings: standard epoxy has very little give, so it crazes and lifts at the edges. Ours has 120% elongation and stretches with the concrete instead, bonded at 100% adhesion so there is no edge for the movement to work under. It also applies from -20°F upward, so a cold snap does not push the job into spring.
Then there is the housing stock, which is more varied here than in most markets. A post-war home in an inner-ring suburb often has a hand-poured slab with no polyethylene barrier underneath it, so ground moisture moves upward with nothing to stop it. A build from the last twenty years usually has a modern barrier and behaves differently. The same coating suits both, but the preparation does not, which is why we look at the slab at the estimate rather than assuming.
Below grade, the same system works in a basement. It is waterproof, seamless with nothing porous for mildew to establish in, and the basecoat is zero-VOC and odor-free, which matters most in a finished basement with limited ventilation.
Installation takes a day. Most floors need only a broom-sweep prep, though some require mild grinding or sanding, and the floor is ready for full use in 24 hours.
